At the Heart of the Largest Smolt Facility in Norway

Nordlaks is a Norwegian totally built-in firm that produces, processes, and sells Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout worldwide. It has recently completed the building of a brand new smolt facility for fish up to 1 pound at Innhavet in Hamarøy municipality. This RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) fish farm is the most important of its kind in Norway, with a particular focus on smolt welfare. The land-based facility has state-of-the-art equipment for optimum biosecurity and sustainability. At the guts of the RAS process, all recirculation pumps had been provided by Sulzer.
PROJECT DATA

Fifty AHLSTAR and BE recirculation pumps (continuous duty) in water treatment loops. The dry-installed single-stage overhung pumps are outfitted with semi-open impellers and single mechanical seals.
Five VUPX-0402 (602,312 gallons per hour at 10 toes of head) submersible propeller pumps (intermittent duty) for the emptying of fish tanks.
THE CHALLENGE

The Innhavet RAS plant has thirty-four fish tanks of various capacities (92,000 to 264,000 gallons) in 5 separate major sections. Each section is impartial from the others and consists of its own full water remedy system in a semi-closed loop (98 % recirculation plus 2 % make-up water). ไดอะแฟรม from the fish tanks first flows by gravity to a rotating drum filter for the removing of the main suspended stable particles. It then falls into an MBBR (moving mattress biofilm reactor) for TAN (total ammonium nitrogen) discount. After passing by way of a countercurrent degasser for the stripping of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, the handled water is finally pumped to some head tanks, previous to oxygenation and return to the fish tanks.
In each fish tank, the water is fully renewed each half an hour. The well-being of the smolts is very depending on a relentless circulate of water by way of the power. The reliability of the recirculation pumps is, due to this fact, of paramount importance.
High overall vitality performance of the RAS plant means a better environmental footprint and decreased operating prices. Consequently, the primary elements of the water therapy loops should have top-class efficiencies, particularly the recirculation pumps.
THE SOLUTION

As a long-term supplier of equipment (pumps and turbines) to different Nordlaks plants, Sulzer was involved at an early stage of the new venture. In collaboration with the Momek Group, a large industrial service supplier in Scandinavia, the pumps had been carefully selected, not only to fulfil the necessities during the warranty interval, however to run optimally and economically throughout the whole lifetime of the location. For the recirculation of the brackish water, fifty AHLSTAR and BE process pumps in duplex materials have now been put in and are operating repeatedly. In addition, 5 VUPX submersible propeller pumps are used on intermittent duty when the fish tanks are emptied through the switch of smolts.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

By selecting to work with a trusted partner, the consumer made sure to get fast and everlasting technical support, along with the best merchandise. The recirculation pumps have the next major benefits:
Extremely excessive hydraulic efficiencies that by far exceed the strictest vitality regulations for water pumps. This means large energy savings over time and smaller complete price of ownership, duty factors close to BEP (best efficiency points), low rotation speeds, and rigid baseplates grouted in concrete. The pump items are working smoothly with minimized vibration ranges. Superior-grade material is used for all wetted components. For the selection of pump material involved with brackish water, the long-term perspective favored duplex chrome steel rather than 316SS. Duplex steels have better design strength than austenitic stainless steels, as properly as greater corrosion, abrasion, and pitting resistance. In the top, upkeep costs and the chance of downtime are lowered.
Sulzer is a recognized supplier within the fish farm market, with progressive and confirmed pumping, mixing, and aeration options, and provides highly energy-efficient products with low life-cycle costs and the smallest attainable environmental footprint. As a cloth specialist in a variety of contemporary water, brackish water, seawater, and brine functions, we are ready to supply pumps in forged iron, 316 stainless steel, duplex, tremendous duplex, SMO, and so on. .
